Buffalo Panel

Buffalo Panel

While searching for rock art in Montezuma Canyon last year I came across this nice panel of petroglyphs depicting a group of buffalo and elk. Following the animals are a few riders on horseback that appear to be pecked in a Ute style similar to the Wolfe Panel in Arches National Park.

Pregnant Buffalo

There are plenty of unique petroglyphs found within Nine Mile Canyon, and this one depicting a pregnant buffalo is certainly among them.

Here’s a photo from a new petroglyph panel I visited on Saturday near Montrose, Colorado. I’ve been wanting to visit the Shavano Valley Petroglyph Park for a while now, but never followed through in obtaining permission to go. Last week a got a call from my friend Greg who was planning on visiting the site so it was the perfect time for me to finally get out there. We met up at the site around sunrise (which meant it was a very early morning for us) and spent a few hours exploring and photographing the petroglyphs. This is certainly one of the better petroglyph sites I have visited in the area and the bears in this panel are very cool.

Nine Mile Owl Petroglyphs

Nine Mile Owl Petroglyphs

This past Black Friday I got up bright and early but I didn’t head to the mall or to our local big box store. Instead I took a drive through Nine Mile Canyon to find some new rock art. I’m sure I had a much better day than anyone out trying to get a deal.

One of the highlights of my day was finally visiting this awesome owl petroglyph panel. I’ve wanted to get to this one for a few months and am glad I was able to make it happen this year. The details in this petroglyph are just amazing!

Leading A Horse to Water

Leading a Horse to Water

One of the many Ute petroglyphs found along the road in Nine Mile Canyon. This historic scene features a rider on a horse being led somewhere by someone with a rope. I wonder where they could be headed?
