I’ve posted a photo of the Ascending Sheep panel before, but I was going through some of my photos from last year and came across this one that I hadn’t touched. I liked they way it was composed so I processed it and decided to post it up here. I’m glad this one didn’t get lost on my hard drive never to be seen again!
I spent the long weekend in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park hiking and searching for more rock art. I’ve been out looking for this pictograph panel a few times before without any success. This time I finally managed to find it! I really like the trapezoidal-shaped anthropomorph found here.
Earlier this month I spent some time searching The Needles and Indian Creek for ruins and rock art. As I searched along Indian Creek, I found this nice panel of white pictographs. Most of it is comprised of white dots arranged in lines that remind me of the panel near Peekaboo Spring in Salt Creek Canyon. There are also a few different kinds of handprints found here.
It’s been a little while since I have updated this blog, so I’m sorry about that. Things have been crazy these last few weeks but are finally getting back to normal…which means I can start getting out and exploring the backcountry in search of rock art and ruins once again. As a matter of fact, I just spent the weekend on Cedar Mesa in search of the specific ruin featured in the photo above. As you might have guessed, I did manage to find it!
This well-preserved ruin is nestled in the back of a deep alcove which has helped protect it from the elements and kept it in good shape. The most unusual part of this ruin is the painted pictographs on it’s exterior. I can’t recall seeing anything else like it which makes this one pretty unique. Because of the photogenic alcove this granary was located in, I had a lot of fun taking photoso of it from all different angles, so I’m sure I’ll be posting other photos of it in the future. This photo was taken to emphasize the curved lines and golden color of the smoke-stained ceiling of the alcove above the ruin.
Since I’m home this weekend, I decided to re-process a few photos that I took earlier last year since my techniques have improved greatly since then. Here’s a photo I took last March when I visited the Yellow Comet Panel near Moab. I was really able to bring out the yellow pigment that is very hard to see even with the naked eye.
