Here’s a large panel of red pictographs found on Cedar Mesa known as the Red Bear Panel. When I first came across this impressive panel, I was surprised as just how large the bear in the middle was. This photo doesn’t do it’s size justice. While bear petroglyphs are pretty common around Western Colorado and the Moab area, I can’t recall seeing any other bear imagery on Cedar Mesa before?
Ute Bear Dance
Here’s a photo from a new petroglyph panel I visited on Saturday near Montrose, Colorado. I’ve been wanting to visit the Shavano Valley Petroglyph Park for a while now, but never followed through in obtaining permission to go. Last week a got a call from my friend Greg who was planning on visiting the site so it was the perfect time for me to finally get out there. We met up at the site around sunrise (which meant it was a very early morning for us) and spent a few hours exploring and photographing the petroglyphs. This is certainly one of the better petroglyph sites I have visited in the area and the bears in this panel are very cool.
Bear Hunt Panel
Since I didn’t visit any rock art this weekend for a change, I’m going to post a photo of this large bear found near Moab since I did drive by it yesterday on my way home. This is a well known petroglyph panel found near Moab along the Potash Road. The large bear appears to be a newer addition to this panel than the other figures and is actually superimposed over a few of them.
