Ute Bear Dance

Ute Bear Dance

Here’s a photo from a new petroglyph panel I visited on Saturday near Montrose, Colorado. I’ve been wanting to visit the Shavano Valley Petroglyph Park for a while now, but never followed through in obtaining permission to go. Last week a got a call from my friend Greg who was planning on visiting the site so it was the perfect time for me to finally get out there. We met up at the site around sunrise (which meant it was a very early morning for us) and spent a few hours exploring and photographing the petroglyphs. This is certainly one of the better petroglyph sites I have visited in the area and the bears in this panel are very cool.

Butler Wash Petroglyphs

Butler Wash Petroglyphs

An amazing panel of Basketmaker petroglyphs found along the San Juan River near the mouth of Butler Wash. One of the largest panels around, and a popular stop for rafters on the river. This is just a very small selection of all the petroglyphs found at this location.

Solar Snake

Solar Snake

Since I am not able to visit the Solstice Snake today for the summer solstice I will go ahead and post another photo from this amazing experience from last year. For those that do not know about the Solstice Snake, on the summer solstice for less than two minutes an arrowhead of light appears near the head of this very large and well-executed snake petroglyph.

Bighorn Ruins

Bighorn Ruins

Last weekend I probably took my last trip to the desert for a little while until things cool down a bit again. While I was out exploring some remote canyons of Cedar Mesa I visited these interesting ruins with a few pictographs of bighorn sheep nearby.
